About us
Hi Eamonn here founder of Jewellers clay
I first got interested in Precious Metal clay a few years ago when my sister introduced me to it, she was a crafter, she hates being called a crafter, she was quite inventive in her designs and it fascinated me when I saw her turn a lump of clay into a piece of fine silver jewellery, right before my eyes.
So, it was mulling over in my head for some time, I wanted to know how to make this clay.
My background was in chemistry and after some research I found a way to make some clay. the trick is to make very fine particles, the binder to make it stick together like clay was simpler it’s called Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, scientists like long words that’s why we’re unbeatable at scrabble.
Anyway, I had many attempts at making the metal clay, but I had a big problem, the clay, when fired, would never come out smooth no matter how much I sanded and burnished it. I couldn’t sell an inferior product.
I gave up a few times over a couple of years but always tried again when I thought about what the problem might be.
Finally, I was reading an article about a method for recovering silver from photographic waste solutions. The article mentioned in passing a last step for cleaning impurities in the silver powder. I tried this process on my clay and sure enough, it worked to produce amazing clay. I was over the moon.
So with our silver metal clay, making yourself fine silver jewellery is easier than you think. From buying our product to being proud of custom-made jewellery, you finished at your home, all in easy steps. We have a beginner’s video to guide you through the process.
If you’re like me it will amaze you when a piece of clay you made, fired with a blowtorch, gas hob or kiln, ends up a piece of fine silver jewellery. Call it a modern form of alchemy. You will be surprised how easy it is and how few basic tools you need to get started.
What is Silver Metal Clay?
It feels just like clay that can be formed into any shape.
The clay is made of only 4 components very fine silver particles, so fine it would take many particles to make the size of a sand grain.
Also Binder to make it stick together like clay
And water containing some anti drying chemical which makes the clay workable for a long time.
Once dried to remove water, heated with a flame or in a kiln to burn away everything else leaving pure silver behind.
The silver particles fuse together, forming solid fine silver grade 999 fineness.
The process happens below the melting point of the silver, making it easy to do at home., this is called sintering.
It does shrink due to the particles fusing together about 10 to 15 percent is usual.
Every batch of our jeweller’s clay silver is checked for shrinkage and recorded on the pack.

Using Molds
If you wanted to reproduce an object you like in silver metal clay so you can wear it with pride. Moulds might be the thing you need. Mould material can be formed over the object you want to reproduce. When cured the flexible mould is peeled away from the object forming a perfect copy in reverse showing every detail of the original.
Then fill it with the clay and let that dry then carefully peal the mold from the dried clay for a perfect replica that you can fire in the normal way.
